Alexander Glen, who was originally PC 27, joined the Gateshead Force on 3rd July 1876 (date sworn in) having left Berwickshire Police on the 11th June 1876 where he'd served as a constable for 2 years. He received a testimonial from John Gardew, Head Constable at Berwick on Tweed.
He was aged 23 years when he joined Gateshead Police and was living at 11 Elswick St, but no district is shown.
He was promoted to 1st Class Constable on the 29th September 1877
Promoted to Merit Class 2nd September 1889
Promoted to Sergant 30th August 1897
Retired on pension on 2nd December 1905
He was married with 2 children when he joined Gateshead, and was 5'11" tall. He could read and write.
His trade or calling is shown as a Labourer.
This photograph was donated by Malcolm Harris, the Great Grandson of Alexander. Malcolm informs us that Alexander collapsed on duty at the Gateshead side of the old Redheugh Bridge on the 26th February 1915 aged 61yrs and died. Apparently he was taken home on a Police Cart/Barrow to the house in Cotesworth Road, Gateshead. Malcolm's mother informs us that he had already retired but was serving again due to the war.
You will note that the photograph shows the letter 'A' on the officer's collar; I am informed that Alexander may have been attached to the Chief Constables Office, and this signifies this.
